Worship

Last month in our leadership training meeting with Pastor Garner he taught us about worship. One of the things he said has been stuck on repeat in my mind is that worship signals a re-orientation of our relationship to God. Meaning that worship puts our relationship with God into the place it is supposed to be. Worship reminds us of who God is and who we are by comparison. It also reminds us of all that God is capable of, which in turn makes the impossible seem possible in our lives.

When I was around 8 years old my father was laid off from the steel factory he worked at in Lansing, MI. At the time he was also the senior pastor of a small church in Ann Arbor, where we lived, that was not yet able to support him financially. So things were really tight for us financially and to make matters more stressful for my parents, Christmas was also approaching.

One day during the same season my mother went shopping for groceries. As she went up and down the aisles she would pick out the things she knew we needed looking for the best possible deals to save money. One by one as she picked out the best bargain item, she felt a prompting of the Holy Spirit to put it back. She thought it was the strangest thing but had learned to trust this feeling and so she put each item back on the shelf and came home with almost nothing.

A Wish For Us

In: Vertical Blogs

8 Nov 2009

Have you ever made a wish? Closed your eyes, blew out the candles; have you ever thrown coins into a fountain and made a wish for yourself? I think whether seriously or in jest I think we all have. Have you ever had a wish for your kids, one that you earnestly wanted to come true or for them to realize? I definitely have wishes for my own kids that hurt so bad I want them to realize. Would you believe God has a wish for us? A wish he earnestly wants for us.

I have read this scripture before but blew past this point. Rev 3:15 says, “I know your deeds, that you are neither hot nor cold; I wish that you were cold or hot.” If you read on in the verse it says if you are lukewarm He will spit you out. That’s what I used to focus on, but recently I discovered that God sees me and has a wish for me. He is the creator of the whole world, multiple galaxies. He could grow tired of our selfish ways and create a whole new planet and turn His attention there, BUT He doesn’t.

Reading through the Gospels and Acts this year made it really clear to me that in the lives of Jesus followers supernatural activity is the norm not the exception. Jesus sent the twelve and the 70 out in His name to preach the gospel, heal the sick and cast out demons. In Acts these activities continue with addition of the power of the Holy Spirit. There were regular times of prayer and the laying on of hands. On a daily basis believers were lead by the Holy Spirit. Miracles weren’t limited to Jesus or the apostles. This new movement of Christ followers gained a reputation for possessing supernatural power.

It’s in my heart to see the power of God visit our youth in the same way. That’s why this year we are urging to students to spend time daily in the presence of God through reading the Word, prayer & worship. Each week in our Wednesday night services we’re giving them the opportunity to lay hands on each other in prayer and encourage each other with what God has been speaking/doing in their lives. Already this school year, I’ve witnessed students interceding with one another in prayer and in their daily lives making major changes to live the supernatural life of a Jesus follower. Please join with me in asking for a supernatural move of the Holy Spirit in the daily lives of our students.
